A mediados de los años 40s Diego Rivera comenzó la construcción del Anahuacalli, edificación que contendría su nuevo estudio y albergaría su enorme colección de arte precolombino.
Con motivo de la invitación que se me hizo para participar en la exposición colectiva “Elefante Negro” con una pieza nueva de sitio específico, convoqué a los homónimos de Diego Rivera que viven en la ciudad de México, a participar en una sesión de dibujo en el estudio, nunca estrenado, que construía el pintor mexicano antes de que su muerte lo interrumpiera.
El motivo era dejar que su espíritu pudiera volver para cerrar el círculo, abierto por él cincuenta años antes, al erguir los primeros muros del edificio Anahuacalli.

Diego Rivera´s last drawings, 2007, drawing and video.

In the mid 1940s, Diego Rivera began the construction of Anahuacalli, the building which would house his new studio and his enormous collection of pre-Colombian art.

On the occasion of an invitation to contribute a new, site-specific piece to the collective exhibition “Black Elephant”, I convened namesakes of Diego Rivera living in Mexico City that I found through the yellow pages to participate in a drawing session in the studio – never inaugurated – which the Mexican painter was constructing when his death interrupted. The intention was double: allow Rivera’s spirit to return to close the circle, left uncompleted by him fifty years earlier when he erected the first walls of the building, and on the other side, reinforce the ideal of the democratization of art and creative power.
